• What Amount Works Best?

    May 7th, 2008

Our friend and awesome creator Zack Scott suggested we ask you, the community members, about how you felt about different award amounts for our assignments. We’ve been mixing it up, and we would love to get your feedback.

  1. Tony Lazzeroni Says:

I work with a 5-man team on average, so something easily divisible by five (to a mentionable number like $500, $1000, $2000, $3000) would work fine for me.

  2. Zack Scott Says:

    Or two-hundred $10,000 prizes!

  3. David Says:

I think the bigger prize the better!.
I spend the same amount of time, money, and energy on all my spots. So if I spend 2 weeks in pre-pro, 1 week shooting, a week cutting, and a few days on sound design I would like the big $10,000 to $20,000 payoff.

  4. Slater Says:

Honestly, it’s not about the money. Well, okay. It IS, to a degree. But at least for me, it’s as much about Time Spent on Project vs. What Chance Do I Have to Win vs. My Understanding of the Product Being Advertised.

As a creator, if I don’t “get” the concept, I’m not as likely to enter the contest, regardless of the reward. Harold and Kumar and SlimFast are two that come to mind which I didn’t enter because I couldn’t “feel” the connection to the products. Could I have produced something anyway? Yeah, but I weighed my chances of winning, and opted out.

I’d rather see more CONTESTS than more money (and, yeah, Mark, I know you’re working on that *wink*), but in my ideal scenario, I’d like to receive a call or e-mail from XLNTads to the effect of: “Hey, Slater, our New Client X saw your ProQuo video, and would like you to do a similar one for them, to the tune of $5,280…”

Whaddaya say? You guys wanna be my agents?

    Hmmm… interesting idea, huh?

Could not say it better(thanks david):

What I want to ask is: if it is $ 15000 for the best spot and the company likes 2 different spots why can’t they pay another $15000, for a great spot it is still very cheep,???

  6. Chris Says:

I agree with alot thats been said so far. I will never go into a contest with the mindset that I will put $1500 worth of effort/energy into a video. It is always about trying to do something new/creative/fun to the best of our abilities. So when the prize offered goes down (even if there are more available) I take a bit more time considering if I will even enter.

For us this issue goes hand in hand with the other recent post about the multi-faceted creators. We enjoy entering contests as much as any other part of our jobs, but we can only continue to enter them if it is worth the time and energy put into the projects. If the potential return on a contest is minimized, then it makes more sense for us to pursue more traditional clients (as boring as the work could be).

But obviously this is an issue for the brand as well. If they are seeking just one awesome video I would think the one prize would be the best approach. That way they would many teams of awesome creators going all out to win $15k. But if they are looking for a more diverse campaign then the multiple payouts make much more sense.

Alot to consider, but for me as a creator the vote goes somewhere between the 3 x $5000 and 5 x $3000.

You guys are rockin’ us with some great feedback! Thank you so much! Keep it coming.

  8. Matt Says:

Why not have one 10K winner and five 1k winners? Or some other variation like that.

  9. Tony Lazzeroni Says:

heres an idea: create a seperate tier of ad-makers!

Have the first tier be anyone who creates an account and market that to the smaller businesses (maybe with lower budgets). Have the prizes be smaller, and accept more winners.

In addition to those prizes, each winner will get access to the second tier of clients (larger clients, stuff for TV, etc). These should be larger prizes and fewer videos accepted. The advantage here is that with clients like (for example) Bud Light, who have less time to view submissions, are assured that they are only getting entries from accomplished filmmakers.

only give access to tier 2 to winners from tier 1, but allow those winners to enter any contest in either tier.

    make sense? good? bad?

  10. Mark Schoneveld Says:

We’re working on something just as you describe, Tony! You read our minds! :)

  11. Mentok (The Mind-Taker) Says:

Read your minds? …or TOOK them!

    oooo-EEEE-OOOO!

  12. John Says:

While I like the smaller prizes, I end up working on these videos with a very, very minimal crew; and we put in a decent amount of work. For that reason, I like the bigger prizes (mind you, we haven’t won anything yet. ha). But, on the other hand, I have seen many, many great videos that I wish could be rewarded equally. So, I think that the $5,000 prizes are the best option. There’s a good amount (three, most of the time) and they seem to be commensurate with the quality of the videos. Some of the filmmakers are incredibly gifted. Keep up the great work and remember, it’s not about the money, it’s about the end product.

i voted today for a Healthy Mix Of awards - but I like the 5k for 3 winners and the 10 winners at 1500k. I like the 5k for me - that works for my target window of work vs reward. I like the occasional 10 for the democracy of it and gives a chance for all the creators to get some cash and feel included in the give and go of this game.

I actually do my productions all alone. It’s just me, and I know a lot of actors that I work with on paid and unpaid gigs that I ask to come by and be in the videos. I actually wind up pretty much writing and shooting everything one 1 day and cutting it at night all by myself before the deadline. My work probably suffers for that.

Its not feasible for me to rock out for like 3 to 10 days shooting for a 1500 reward, but 1500 is not bad for 1 or 2 days work. For some cats though, thats like a million bucks - i live in NY where 1500 is a reasonable lunch for two.

Of course I’ve never actually won anything either :) so this is all speculation on my part.

Any word on NET10? Maybe we might have a shot at least a cell phone :)
