  • Vote for Our SXSW Panels

Posted by Mark Schoneveld on August 15th, 2008. Categories: events, our news, xlntads | 3 Comments »

SXSW is a festival celebrating independent music and film, but in recent years it has become the epicenter for innovation with it’s Interactive festival that’s joined the party. Lots of amazing new products launch at this event and many of the most influencial people in tech come.

We’re getting our foot in the door there as well! But we need your help. We need folks to go vote for our panel discussion suggestions. Here’s how you do it:

    1. Go to http://panelpicker.sxsw.com and sign up (you can sign up several times if you use more than one email address!)
    2. When you get to the master list of session ideas, find Neil’s by entering “Neil Perry” or “XLNTads” into the search box.
    3. You should see two sessions listed: “Top Lessons Learned in Consumer-Generated Advertising” and “How to Make a Brand Friendly Video”
    4. Give them each 5 stars!

Let me know if you have any questions or trouble with the panel picker site. Thanks!

  • Philadelphia YouTube Gathering

Posted by Mark Schoneveld on June 17th, 2008. Categories: community, events, xlntads | 3 Comments »

Way back before XLNTads even launched, we ventured up to New York City to participate in the 07/07/07 YouTube Gathering. We had a blast, so we’re excited to have another meet up in our hometown this summer! We’re going to be sure to attend on July 12, 2008 at Independence Park here in Philly!

We hope those of you in the near vicinity will come and join us for good times, new friends and great video. It’s always nice to meet folks in person after seeing their mugs on a tiny box on the computer screen. Can’t wait to see ya!

(by the way, while we do like the word, we don’t say Yo! that much in Philly… haha)

  • 48 Hour Film Project Goodtimes

Posted by Mark Schoneveld on May 1st, 2008. Categories: community, events | 3 Comments »

We had an awesome time at the Philadelphia 48 Hour Film Project. Got to meet tons of new folks, great video makers all. There were 44 teams in this year’s event and since I was one of the judges, I got to watch them all. Pretty rad, huh?

XLNTads wanted to sponsor some top awards for the show, so we handed out these cash awards to the best films of the weekend:

$750 Best Film - “Kitchen Aide” by No Right Return
$500 Best Directing - “Dirty Dishes” by Psynema
$250 Best Writing - “Dancing with Myself” by Spoonfullofpoo

Congratulations to all of you who participated in this fun event. You’ll be able to watch all of the videos from this festival as well as those from the other 48 Hour Film Project events around the globe at their new video channel 48.tv. Also, they’ve got some blog action themselves. Check it out!

See you next year in Philly. And heck, we had such a great time, we’ll probably come to more events around the world!

  • 48 Hour Film Event Schedule

Posted by Mark Schoneveld on April 24th, 2008. Categories: community, events | No Comments »

If you’re looking for a good time next week and you live in the Philadelphia area (we do!), then you might want to come down to the 48 Hour Film Festival. Here are the details from organizer Scott Johnston:

Come On out THIS Tuesday and Wed to INTERNATIONAL HOUSE, 3701 Chestnut street to see 48 local films WORLD PREMIERE!

    48 teams
    have 48 hours
    to complete 48 films

Given a random genre from a hat (including) mystery, superhero, comedy, horror and film noir (to name a few) the filmmakers must also include a line of dialogue, a character, and a prop in their 7 minute short film. BUT the entire project (including musical score, and credits) MUST be finished within 48 hours of the kick-off (friday April 25th) and handed in on Sunday (April 27th) the screenings (in front of audiences of friends and foes) come 48 hours later (see below) and this year - the awards and prizes are bigger than ever:

to the victor goes $750 (then $500) and $250 for 3rd! Awards sponsored by XLNTads!

BUT the real winners are the folk who finish the challenge at all. late films DO screen but do NOT get to compete for the awards. Will this year be the year Philly Returns to the International 12 ‘Best’ picks? “can a team of filmmaking friends actually draw the genre of Sci-Fi/Musical/Superhero spoof and lose their actors (than have to ‘act’ themselves) lose their music files, THEN just ‘wing it’ into a mic on their iMac - rush the film in at the last minute (presume its gonna be awful) then WIN “BEST” of Philly?”

yes, and much, much weirder things happen. Like YOUR VOTE actually making a difference in selecting the WINNERS (oh, i said it)

For a complete listing of the 48 teams and their screening times please click onto: http://www.48hourfilm.com/philadelphia SEE what the hell happens when Philly Filmmakers attempt to create magic in under 48 hours!

  • Thoughts on YouTube Meet Up in New York 7/7/07

Posted by Mark Schoneveld on July 18th, 2007. Categories: events, xlntads | 3 Comments »

i-tube-ny.pngRecently, XLNTads went up to Washington Square Park for the big ‘NYC 777′ YouTube gathering. We gave away a few hundred XLNT t-shirts, almost got to see the Diet Coke/Mentos explosion (it got cancelled by the park service), and met a ton of awesome video creators. The turnout was amazing. Probably over 1000 people gathered at the park throughout the day, and we had over 250 attendees at the after-party at The Grand NYC we co-sponsored with Blip.tv, Digital Influence Group and Next New Networks.

I had a few thoughts on the event, now that the day has been digested in my brain. One of the most powerful lessons we learned is that community rules. Get people creating, and they don’t start throwing their work into a giant void. What they’re doing is sharing. They’re putting their creative energies out there to make friends. To show off their chops. To be seen. And to build their own micro-brand. We love that the next step in this sharing process is to actually meet one another.

Also, many of these YouTube video bloggers have built up their own micro-brands within the larger context of the YouTube brand itself. It’s amazing to see the ingenuity of a Nalts or the gregariousness of a HappySlip. These people are leveraging this platform to create a completely new media and a completely new genre of creator: the prosumer. It’s exciting to be a part of this revolution, and to watch the ‘democratization of digital media‘ unfold before our eyes.
